Ebola

On September 4, 2025, the World Health Organization confirmed an Ebola outbreak in Kasai Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The index case was a 34-week pregnant woman from Bulape Health Zone who developed symptoms and died on August 25. As of September 4, there are 28 suspected cases, including 15 deaths. Laboratory tests confirmed the Zaire strain of Ebola virus. 

 

MEASLES

U.S.

As of September 3, 2025, Center for Disease Control reports a total of 1,431 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. in 2025. 12 % of cases have required hospitalization (178 cases of 1,431), and three deaths have been reported. 

According to Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy on September 8, 2025, two new measles cases were reported in unvaccinated residents: one in South Carolina, the state’s third this year and linked to recent international travel, and one in Utah’s Grand County in a child exposed outside the county. No school-related transmission has been identified.

On September 3, 2025, the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) confirmed a new measles case in Bergen County—not linked to previous cases—while urging residents to verify their MMR vaccination status

On August 12, 2025, Virginia health officials confirmed the state’s fourth measles case of the year. The patient is a school-age child in the Eastern Region who recently traveled internationally. 

Canada.

As of September 8, 2025, Canada has reported 4,849 measles cases where 70% occurred in children, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. Ontario accounts for 49% of the total, followed by Alberta with 38%. 88% were unvaccinated, and 8% required hospitalization. Genotype D8 remains the most frequently detected strain. 1 death has been reported. 

 

MPOX

Africa

Sierra Leone: The latest update from the World Health Organization shows 5,245 confirmed mpox cases as of August 31, a surge of 48 cases since August 24. According to a report from Africa Centres for Disease and Control and Prevention on September 6, these cases are linked to clade 2b, with 5% of confirmed cases in children under 15 years of age and 51% of cases occurring in males.

Uganda: As of August 31, 2025, Uganda reported 6,553 confirmed mpox cases, according to the World Health Organization. This is an increase of 81 cases since August 24. As shown in Figure 3.2.1, case numbers in Uganda have begun to rise again after recent weeks of slower growth. These cases are linked to clade 1b. 

Guinea: As of August 31, 2025, The World Health Organization has reported 833 cases in 2025 and one death in Guinea. This is an increase of 127 cases since August 24. The outbreak is linked to clade 2b.  

 

POLIO

As of September 3, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reports one WPV1 case in Afghanistan and three WPV1 cases in Pakistan. In Africa, two cVDPV2 cases have been confirmed in Angola, and one case each in Chad and Nigeria. Additionally, Papua New Guinea has reported one cVDPV2 case.

H5N1

U.S.

As of September 5, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not reported any cases of person-to-person transmission of H5N1 in the United States. The total remains at 70 confirmed cases and one death.
