MPOX

Africa

Sierra Leone: The latest update from the World Health Organization shows 5197 confirmed mpox cases as of August 24, a surge of 48 cases since August 17. According to a report from Africa CDC on August 31, these cases are linked to clade 2b, with 5% of confirmed cases in children under 15 years of age and 52% of cases occurring in males.

Uganda: As of August 24, 2025, Uganda reported 6,553 confirmed mpox cases, according to the World Health Organization. This is an increase of 31 cases since August 17. These cases are linked to clade 1b. 

Guinea: The World Health Organization has reported 706 mpox cases in 2025 and one death in Guinea. This is an increase of 72 cases since August 17. The outbreak is linked to clade 2b. 

 

MEASLES

U.S.

As of August 27, 2025, Center for Disease Control reports a total of 1,408 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. in 2025. 13 % of cases have required hospitalization (176 cases of 1,408), and three deaths have been reported. 

Canada.

As of September 2, 2025, Canada has reported 4,799 measles cases where 70% occurred in children, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. Ontario accounts for 50% of the total, followed by Alberta with 38%. 88% were unvaccinated, and 7% required hospitalization. Genotype D8 remains the most frequently detected strain. 1 death has been reported. 

 

POLIO

On August 28, 2025, the World Health Organization confirmed the first human case of paralytic polio in Papua New Guinea since 2018. The patient is a 4-year-old unvaccinated boy from Lae, Morobe Province, who developed acute flaccid paralysis due to circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2).

As of August 27, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reports one WPV1 case in Afghanistan and six WPV1-positive environmental samples in Pakistan. In Africa, Chad has reported one cVDPV2 case and one cVDPV3 case. Elsewhere, Germany has confirmed one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample, Israel one cVDPV1-positive environmental sample, and Yemen 25 new cVDPV2 cases. 

 

H5N1

U.S.

As of August 29, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not reported any cases of person-to-person transmission of H5N1 in the United States. The total remains at 70 confirmed cases and one death.
