Seminar on Mozambique

José Jaime Macuane gave a presentation at the Center of African Economies on 8 May 2017.

His presentation analysed the political and economic context and the prospects of Mozambique in the coming years. Jose's power point presentation can be accessed here.

After two decades of economic growth and political stability, following the end of civil war in 1992, Mozambique entered in a spiral of multiple crises, characterized by the resuming of military confrontation between the Government and the Mozambique National Resistance (Renamo); a political crisis after the general election; and the deceleration of the economic growth. At the backdrop of this situation is the upcoming congress of the ruling party, Frelimo, due in September 2017, and the highly-anticipated announcement of the Final Investment Decisions (FID) of the LNG projects of the Rovuma Basin world-class gas reserves that will considerably change the economic outlook of the country in the near future. Municipal and general elections will be held in 2018 and 2019 respectively, amidst one of the most serious crises of popularity of the ruling party since independence in 1975.
