A major renovation project will provide a bright and modern study environment

The Danish Parliament's Finance Committee has approved the renovation of the central campus area at Roskilde University, known as the Pergola area. This will entail relocation and detours during the construction period, but the result will be worth the effort.

The university's foundation

Roskilde University was built in 1972. The Pergola area is part of the first free-standing buildings at RUC, the houses. The houses are central to the university's history and were the spatial cornerstones for problem-based group work. The houses formed the physical framework for the new form of teaching that still characterises the university today.

Coherence and openness

The central spaces of the new mezzanine buildings will provide the learning environments with a new visible cohesion and openness.

The new mezzanine buildings are designed with open environments adjacent to the more closed existing teaching buildings. The mezzanines will be the new indoor gathering spaces for academic and social interaction and will facilitate a wide range of informal and formal activities in the spirit of Roskilde University.

The old buildings will be completely renovated and opened up with glass walls towards the corridors. The corridors will be broken up in strategic places, with open areas for more informal and social gatherings. There will also be spaces for project and group work. The fa?ades will be opened up towards the campus and the new garden environments. Outward-facing features such as cafés and gathering spaces will become directly accessible and visible.
