POLIO

As of April 23, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reports a total of three cVDPV2 cases in Nigeria. In addition, two WPV1 cases and 22 WPV1-positive environmental samples were detected in Pakistan.

 

H5N1

U.S.

As of May 2, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports no new cases of person-to-person transmission of H5N1 in the United States. The total remains at 70 confirmed cases and one death.

 

MPOX

Africa

Uganda: No new data has been reported since April 13, 2025. The most recent data from the World Health Organization shows a cumulative total of 4033 laboratory-confirmed mpox cases in Uganda in 2025.

Sierra Leone: According to the World Health Organization, confirmed mpox cases in Sierra Leone have risen sharply in recent weeks, with over 570 of the country’s 678 cases in 2025 reported in the past six weeks.
In figure 3.4.1, the surge is clearly visible in the epidemic curve, where orange bars representing Sierra Leone rise markedly in March and April 2025.

 

MEASLES

U.S.

As of May 2, 2025, the number of reported measles cases in the U.S. has surpassed 900, reaching a total of 935 confirmed cases, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. 13 % of cases are/have been hospitalized (121 cases of 935), and 3 cases have died.

On May 2, North Dakota reported its first measles case since 2011, involving an unvaccinated child in Williams County likely infected by an out-of-state visitor. The child is recovering in home isolation, and health officials are urging vaccination.

As of May 2, 2025, Texas Department of State Health Services reports 683 cases of measles from this year. This is an increase of 59 from April 22, 2025. The majority of cases are unvaccinated/have unknown vaccination status (653 cases of 683).
