Generative AI at Roskilde University
Artificial intelligence has great development potential. At Roskilde University, we embrace technology with curiosity and a critical eye.
Generative AI (GenAI) is already part of our everyday lives. In the future, the technology will support an increasing number of processes and tasks in our daily lives. As a university, we must dare to embrace the technology and actively consider how both employees and students can and should use GenAI. GenAI greatly affects the entire university, including approaches to education, research and communication. The day-to-day operations of the university will also be affected.
The new technology has the potential to automate and improve workflows, but it also brings with it a wide range of challenges. Roskilde University is therefore in the process of developing a comprehensive strategic approach to new technologies.
In general terms, the university's position is as follows:
- RUC's students must be competent actors in a world that is increasingly characterised by GenAI technologies. The students are ahead in many ways, and we need to listen to them and we need to support them. For students, the programmes will focus on developing critical thinking skills related to AI and independent knowledge, skills and competencies. At the same time, it requires a focus on ethical use and an understanding of GenAI's potential challenges such as cheating and harmful bias.
- The technical and administrative staff at the university play a key role in facilitating the transition to an AI-enabled workplace. We must jointly develop an understanding of the many available GenAI tools and, in close collaboration with academic staff and students, we must develop and embed GenAI in the support of the university's core tasks and in daily administrative operations.
- Researchers and teachers are encouraged and supported to explore and use GenAI in their work, while focusing on ethical responsibility and reflection. In research and teaching, GenAI can and must be a tool that can help create innovative solutions to both day-to-day operations and complex societal problems.
Roskilde University will establish a culture that promotes responsible and competent use of GenAI. This involves continuously updating the university's approach to meeting technological developments and challenges, and a constant focus on how we can best utilise GenAI as a tool that contributes to quality in research, learning and administration. It requires new structures, systems and competences for all students and employees and it involves understanding the social, economic and ethical implications of GenAI. All of this is something that we as management and a university take upon ourselves and will work to secure now and in the future.

An AI-generated podcast about Roskilde University's guidelines
Below you can listen to an AI-generated podcast that reproduces selected content from Roskilde University's instructions and guidelines for generative AI, which you can also read about on this webpage. The podcast is created with AI technologies from Google NotebookLM. The visual elements are generated with Hedra and ChatGpt. The podcast offers a compact listening format and at the same time demonstrates what generative AI can currently accomplish. As the content is AI-generated and may contain inaccuracies, the written version should always be used as a primary reference.
The idea for the podcast and its creation came from RUC Digital's Head of Development in consultation with the Deputy Director and the University Director.
