Introduction to the programme

Learn to work with mathematic research and models in areas such as physics, epidemiology, and physiology

Mathematics is a subject which you will study as a part of your bachelor programme at Roskilde University.

Is it possible to design a mathematical model for depression? Why and how do you find new mathematics? Is it so difficult to foresee a financial crisis? These are some of the problem issues you can work with in Mathematics.

In the bachelor subject Mathematics, you will learn about the core elements of mathematics and how to work with basic research in mathematics, mathematical didactics, and mathematical models in areas such as physics, epidemiology, and physiology.

You will have lectures in the core elements of mathematics and participate in independent research, where you apply the elements and learn the mathematics required to solve a problem. Through this combination, you will learn mathematics beyond what is typically in the syllabus and, more importantly, you learn how to familiarise yourself with new mathematics.

In your project work, you will learn to apply mathematical models to represent and process subjects outside of mathematics – and the subject choice is yours, whether it be quantum systems, epidemics, or something completely different within the realm of mathematical modelling.  

All teaching and project writing is conducted in English.

Daily life while studying

Mathematics is a relatively small study programme with less than 20 students a year. This gives you a unique opportunity to work very closely with the academic staff, both during lectures, which are conducted in small groups, and when you receive supervision on your own projects. In your projects, you will work with 1-3 other students, and the project group constitutes an important academic and social basis for you.

Our department is a close-knit community, often with a high level of activity and research staff always available to answer questions. We have excellent study-related facilities, including easy access to equipment, computers with specialised software and technical support. 

From bachelor to master

A bachelor's degree from Roskilde University will provide access to study a master's programme. Depending on which subject(s) you choose as a part of your bachelor's programme, your degree will provide access to one or more of Roskilde University's master's programmes.
