Lindsay Whitfield (RUC) and Cornelia Staritz (University of Vienna), from the AfriCap project, published the chapter ‘Light manufacturing in Ethiopia: the apparel export industry’, in the Oxford Handbook of the Ethiopian Economy published by Oxford University Press in January 2019. This Handbook, the first dedicated to the economy of a single African country, assesses Ethiopia’s unique model of development, where the state plays a central role and where ongoing industrialization processes challenge the long-held erroneous assumption that industrial policy will never work in poor African countries. The chapter contribution by Lindsay Whitfield and Cornelia Staritz examines the role of industrial policy in the apparel export industry.
